By running weekly fresh produce markets in Victorian communities, our vision is for all citizens to have access to quality, affordable, healthy fruit and vegetables. The markets also create opportunity for meaningful social engagement, cultivating a sense of community through cultural diversity & food.
The Community Grocer established as not-for-profit social enterprise in 2014 to address the challenges many Australians face when it comes to putting healthy fresh food on the table. The first market opened in Carlton in 2015. We now run 6 markets throughout Victoria in Fitzroy, Flemington, Mernda, Pakenham and Fawkner.
We have a fantastic team of dedicated staff who run the markets every week in rain, hail or shine and a board of talented professional from all walks of life guide the organisations' strategic direction.
All our operations are underpinned by social-environmental values. We aim to make the market as waste free and plastic free as possible. Customers can use paper bags supplied, but need to BYO carry bags or can re-use bags or boxes the produce came in. All markets have a partnership with a local community garden to ensure all all organic waste is composted.
With produce 71% cheaper than surrounding outlets, our customers can increase their daily intake of fresh fruit and vegetables, cook culturally familiar meals, and feel connected to their community. This has far reaching social and health implication - affecting both physical and emotional well-being.
As a community based, volunteer powered, not-for-profit organisation, our partners and funders make our work possible. We are committed to building and maintaining collaborative partnerships with other community organisations, service providers, businesses, educational institutions and community groups.
We have received some great media attention over the years. Read what the press have to say, watch the fantastic promotional videos our partners have made, and read our monthly newsletters.

Produce, Procurement & Distribution
Produce is sourced mostly from a wholesale supplier, Piccolo Fresh, who buy as locally and farm direct as possible, and all produce is Australian. We are currently expanding our farmer networks and exploring innovative procurement options. Some produce at some markets is now coming directly from farmers. We always stock the produce our customers request whenever possible.
