About us

Our vision is for Thriving, healthy communities - connected by food that is fresh, fair and for everyone

We revitalise local food systems in communities across Melbourne through weekly fresh food markets that provide access to affordable, sustainable and culturally relevant fruit and vegetables.

Our vibrant and inclusive marketplaces increase food security, foster social connection and strengthen local economies.

the problem

One in three Victorians have experienced food insecurity in the past year - meaning they have worried about or gone without food.

What makes healthy food hard to access? Financial stress, limited transport, cultural inaccessibility, and a lack of local, fresh options.

The Community Grocer is changing this.

our approach

We embrace food as a vehicle for change.
We centre people, place and community.
We are inclusive and equitable, always.
We take a whole of systems approach.
We work in partnership as together we are stronger.

The Community grocer MoDEl

Our model is holistic food security solution. It centres place-based markets in communities seeking food security.

There are ‘ingredients’ (or elements) that make our markets what they are.

Each market is made up of different elements of this model, reflecting the community, its strengths and needs. In this way, the market becomes driven by community.

Read our publications for more about our model.
